The number announced Saturday evening by the police is staggering. "104,349 people have been arrested" in Zimbabwe for breaching the containment measures in place since the end of March to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Police call on people to "minimize the effects of the pandemic"

Those arrested were "for not wearing a mask, non-essential movement and prohibited gatherings," said police spokesman Paul Nyathi. Police have called on people to "minimize the effects of the deadly pandemic by reducing travel, observing social distancing, wearing masks and avoiding bars and illegal gatherings."

Zimbabwe has so far recorded 1,478 cases of Covid-19 contamination, 25 of which have been fatal. The country has been ruled since the end of 2017 by Emmerson Mnangagwa, who came to power following a military coup that led to the downfall of Robert Mugabe, in charge of the country for thirty-seven years.
