Yesterday, Syrian voters cast their ballots at polling stations to elect a new parliament in the legislative elections.

Polling stations, numbering more than 7,400, were opened in government-controlled areas, and polling stations were designated for people from areas still outside their control.

About 1,658 candidates are competing this year for the 250-seat People's Assembly, and the total number of eligible voters has not been announced.

In a statement to the Syrian News Agency (SANA), the head of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections, Judge Samer Zumreeq, said that more than 7,400 polling stations were established in 15 electoral districts.

These centers include 1,400 centers where soldiers and members of the security services vote.

It is the third vote in Syria since the war began in March 2011.

This year’s elections come amid a new wave of US sanctions.
