Next come the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (3527.2), Tyumen (2860.2), Kurgan (2714) and Samara (2667.1) regions.

The lowest prevalence rate of obesity was recorded in Primorsky Krai - 549.2 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. 

The Ministry of Health also records low indicators in the Jewish Autonomous Region (685.4), Kaliningrad Region (665.5), Kabardino-Balkaria (618.1) and Moscow (607.7).

In total, in 2019, 2.1 million obese patients were registered in Russia. This is 172 thousand more than a year earlier.

According to Elena Smirnova, an expert at the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Nutrition and Biotechnology, obesity is widespread in all regions of the country and today about 62% of people over 18 years of age have overweight or obesity in Russia.

“Of course, there are regions in which the proportion of citizens with obesity is below average, somewhere higher, but in the whole country the picture is this. In fact, it turns out that in all regions of the country, without exception, over 50% of the population have overweight or obesity, ”she said.

Smirnova added that it is important in assessing the prevalence of obesity to pay attention to regional characteristics, including those related to the genotype of the inhabitants, lifestyle and culture of nutrition.

“Our country is multinational, each region has its own food traditions. The level of education of the population in matters of healthy nutrition, living conditions, financial security and, of course, commitment to a healthy lifestyle also play a big role, ”the expert explained.
