Marc Marquez, the six-time Spanish MotoGP champion, suffers from a fractured right humerus after his spectacular fall during the Spanish GP contested on Sunday at the Jerez circuit, announced his Honda team.

He was transported to hospital in Barcelona for surgery, the source said.

"The MotoGP medical team has confirmed that there is no other serious trauma to the head or chest but that it will remain under observation for 12 hours," Honda said in a statement.

The operation will be carried out on Tuesday, the pilot said on Twitter, promising to "return as soon as possible with more force".

The Spanish GP was the first event in the MotoGP 2020 world championship won by Frenchman Fabio Quartararo. The next one, the Andalusian GP, is scheduled for next Sunday at the same Jerez circuit.
