The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 601,822 people worldwide since the WHO office in China reported the appearance of the disease in late December, according to an AFP report from official sources. Sunday at 11 a.m. GMT.

More than 14,303,420 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 7,810,200 are now considered cured.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections. Some countries only test severe cases, others use testing as a priority for tracing, and many poor countries have only limited screening capacity.

Heavy balance sheets still in Brazil, the United States, Mexico

On Saturday, 5,237 new deaths and 221,954 new cases were reported worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths in their latest balance sheets are Brazil with 921 new deaths, the United States (832) and Mexico (578).

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both death and case numbers, with 140,120 deaths and 3,711,835 cases reported, according to Johns Hopkins University counts. At least 1,122,720 people were declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Brazil with 78,772 deaths for 2,074,860 cases, the United Kingdom with 45,273 deaths (294,066 cases), Mexico with 38,888 deaths (338,913 cases), and Italy with 35,042 dead (244,216 cases).

205,207 deaths in Europe

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 85 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the United Kingdom (67), Spain (61), Italy (58), and Sweden (56).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) officially counted a total of 83,660 cases (16 new between Saturday and Sunday), including 4,634 deaths (0 new), and 78,775 cures.

Europe totaled Sunday at 11:00 GMT 205,207 deaths for 2,938,771 cases, Latin America and the Caribbean 160,866 deaths (3,776,927 cases), the United States and Canada 149,002 deaths (3,821,830 cases), the Asia 48,998 deaths (2,049,522 cases), the Middle East 22,642 deaths (999,405 cases), Africa 14,956 deaths (703,572 cases), and Oceania 151 deaths (13,397 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by the authorities or late publication of data, the 24h increase figures may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
