Wang Yi speaking at the high-level meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council

On July 17, 2020, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi published a title entitled "Multilateralism after the New Crown Pneumonia Outbreak: What kind of UN do we need on the 75th anniversary of its establishment" The video speech of "Resolutely defend multilateralism and promote the building of a community of human destiny".

Wang Yi said that 75 years ago, our ancestors fought through bloody battles to win the victory of the world anti-fascist war. The United Nations came into being and played an indispensable role in maintaining peace and promoting development. Today, 75 years later, major changes have taken place in the international situation, and the new coronary pneumonia epidemic has brought tremendous impact to the world. The most important enlightenment from the multiple challenges to the international community is that the interests of all countries are closely linked, and humanity has increasingly become an indivisible community of destiny.

Wang Yi said that in the face of a major change that has not been seen in a century, the role of the United Nations can only be strengthened, not weakened. The authority of the United Nations must be defended and not allowed to be violated. We need a United Nations that maintains peace and security and safeguards fairness and justice. It needs a United Nations that transcends cultural differences between ethnic systems and promotes harmonious coexistence. It needs a United Nations that is committed to solving the imbalance between the North and the South and promoting common development. The United Nations to meet global challenges.

Wang Yi made four suggestions: First, adhere to multilateralism and oppose unilateralism and protectionism. We must always stand on the side of multilateralism and international justice, maintain the international system with the United Nations at the core, maintain the multilateral trading system based on the World Trade Organization, and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change . We must resolutely abandon unilateralism, oppose retreating from groups and ruining agreements, and start afresh, and we must not undermine the accepted international rules for our own personal challenges.

Second, adhere to the democratization of international relations and oppose hegemonism and power politics. International affairs should be negotiated by various countries, and it is doomed to defeat their own interests over the international community. All countries must abide by the basic principles of international relations such as respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. They should adhere to the principle of equality between the big and the weak, the strong and the weak, and the rich and the poor. It is necessary to resolve contradictions and differences through dialogue and consultation, abandon unilateral coercive measures such as economic blockade and financial sanctions against other countries at all times, reject bullying and power politics, and oppose gross interference in other countries’ internal affairs.

Third, adhere to the international order based on international law and oppose illegal acts and double standards. We must firmly defend the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. We must use uniformly applicable rules to clearly distinguish between right and wrong. We must not practice double standards. Stable.

Fourth, adhere to solidarity and cooperation, and oppose only self-respect and benevolence. We must uphold the people first, life first, strengthen international anti-epidemic cooperation, fully support WHO to play its due role, oppose the politicization, stigmatization and labeling of the virus, and oppose arbitrary "throwing the pot" and "selling responsibility". It is necessary to maintain a stable and smooth supply chain of the global industrial chain, resist scientific and technological hegemony, and abuse national security to promote discrimination and exclusive policies.

Wang Yi said that China is a staunch supporter and practitioner of multilateralism and has always firmly supported the UN to play an active role and maintain its authority and status. In the face of the New Coronary Pneumonia epidemic, China fully supports the work of the United Nations, and will fully implement the anti-epidemic cooperation initiatives announced by President Jin Ping at the 73rd World Health Assembly, and make its best contribution to global anti-epidemic efforts.

Wang Yi said that China is willing to work with all parties to conform to the historical trend of peaceful development, follow the multilateralist action guidelines, and build a beautiful world of lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness, tolerance, cleanness and beauty for the "post-epidemic era" .
