Lack of space, lack of staff, large flows and the fact that the lack of single rooms leads to several patient movements within the hospital walls are pointed out as key factors when infections are spread within a hospital, says researcher Martina Sansone.

- A patient meets very many different people in many different departments during their stay in hospital, says Martina Sansone, researcher and specialist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Worst in Europe

She believes that a number of measures must be applied to prevent the spread of infection within the hospital, but that perhaps the most important factor is the number of care places.

- The short answer is care places, we are the worst in the whole of Europe in terms of number compared to the population, she says.

She says that the parallels to covid-19 are obvious, and believes that the Swedish hospitals have been extremely open, even for relatives, with a high turnover of people. And that it is difficult to diagnose whether patients are contagious or not.

- You fail to assess infectivity, both in emergency rooms and during ongoing care, and this leads to hospital spread, she says.
