• 'Procés'. The Generalitat grants third degree to prisoners nine months after being sentenced
  • Justice: The Constitutional Court refuses to suspend the sentences of the leaders of the 'procés'
  • Third grade: An unusual semi-freedom in the face of such high penalties

The nine convicted by the procés will begin this weekend to enjoy the third degree that the Generalitat of Catalonia has granted them. This means that this Saturday they will be released and will not have to return to the prison that is indicated until Sunday night.

The Department of Criminal Measures of the Generalitat explains that they should only go to prison to sleep from Sunday to Wednesday. Thursdays they will be free until Sunday night. The entry and exit times will be set in each specific case, but the stay in the open regime center will vary between eight and 11 hours. The Ministry of Justice explains that in the centers "control and monitoring measures have been established in accordance with the respective treatment programs."

In this way, the Generalitat executes the agreement to grant the semi-freedom regime just nine months after those affected knew the sentences handed down by the Supreme Court. Among the reasons alleged are the "low risk of recidivism" attributed to Oriol Junqueras and the other eight convicts, who have also participated in "conflict resolution" programs.

The condemned have been able to get out of prison for three to five days a week for months to work, volunteer or care for family members, thanks to the mixed regime of 100.2 that the Generalitat began to grant them since February. In several cases, before they even have the right to receive ordinary exit permits for not yet having served a quarter of the sentence.

The Prosecutor General's Office will appeal the progression of the degree, but that will not prevent the beneficiaries from continuing to enjoy it until the prison surveillance judges rule.
