It was on Wednesday last week that the rescue service was alerted to a fire at a nursing home in Gislaved municipality. Outside in connection with the accommodation, a woman in her 75s was found dead.

- It has emerged that the woman was a smoker and that she used to sit in this place and smoke daily in her wheelchair. It is likely that cigarette smoking has a connection with the fire, police spokeswoman Åsa Willsund announced the same day.

Registered according to lex Sarah

Now the social committee in Gislaved municipality has reported the incident according to lex Sarah to IVO, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate. According to the report, staff were alerted to the fact that the tenant had caught fire and managed to put out the fire shortly afterwards. But despite the effort, the woman's life could not be saved.

The report also states that shortcomings have emerged in the work on routines and what risk assessments are made regarding tenants who smoke in the accommodation. The unit manager of the nursing home has started an investigation which, when completed, will be notified to IVO.
