-We had expected a little more applications like this in the beginning. We have taken into account that between 20,000 and 30,000 landlords can apply for support in total, says Mattias Johansson, national coordinator for rent support at the County Administrative Board in Västra Götaland to TT.

Some industries

He emphasizes that it is too early to draw any conclusions about the demand for state rent subsidies.

The government has set aside SEK 5 billion in support of temporarily reduced fixed rents in certain industries that are particularly financially vulnerable in the corona crisis. This applies, for example, to the hotel and restaurant industry and trade.

From 1 July, landlords can apply for financial support for discounts for tenants in certain industries that have been particularly affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

-Many have been ready with their applications to be able to send them in as early as possible, says Mattias Johansson.

No one still knows how much money the approximately 7,300 landlords, who have applied for support after giving their tenants a discount, have applied for so far.

The grant can be applied for for the period from 1 April to 30 June 2020. The application must be received no later than 31 August.

Risk of cheating

As with many different forms of support, there is also a risk of cheating. Landlords may apply for support without giving their tenants a discount on the rent.

-We are aware of the risk of cheating and make a rigorous check of the applications, says Mattias Johansson.

There are seven different counties that handle the support and they have 1-20 people per county who work with handle the new support.

-It can take a couple of weeks before an application can be granted, but there may be some applications that must be completed and then it takes longer, says Mattias Johansson.
