The accounts of a number of top politicians and businessmen on Twitter have been hacked, while Twitter says it is looking into it, and will issue a statement on the subject.

Among the hacked accounts is Joe Biden, the Democrats' presidential candidate, who was formerly Vice President, Mike Bloomberg, and the famous American rapper Kanye West.

Other famous accounts - including the official accounts of billionaires Bill Gates and Elon Musk, and the accounts of Apple and Uber - were also compromised, as the accounts requested donations via the Bitcoin digital currency.

And the pirated tweets - which were soon deleted - stated that every observer of these accounts has a 30-minute time limit to send to a specific address an amount in Bitcoin, to receive twice that amount.

"This is a scam, do not share it," said Cameron Winklevus, co-founder of Jimini for the exchange in digital currencies, warning of this piracy, and said in a tweet on his official account on Twitter.

While comments and posts on Twitter stated that thousands of dollars in bitcoin were likely sent by those who fell victim to this fraudulent operation; Twitter said that it is "reviewing" what happened, and a statement will be issued shortly.
