Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, quarantined for a week after being tested positive for coronavirus, announced Monday that he will be retested and is looking forward to resuming normal activities. Jair Bolsonaro was speaking in a telephone interview with the CNN Brasil television channel from his official residence in Brasilia, the Alvorada Palace, where he is confined.

The far-right president has said he will have another PCR test on Tuesday. "I will wait for the result with anxiety because I cannot stand this routine of staying at home, it is horrible," he said. The leader posed for the press feeding emus in front of the palace, his face covered with a mask. Jair Bolsonaro, 65, has relativized the severity of the pandemic since the start of the health crisis and declared himself hostile to the containment measures taken by the governors of the Brazilian states, insisting on the need not to block the national economy.

No fever or breathing problems

He said in his interview on Monday that he felt "very good", that he had no fever or breathing problems and that he had not lost taste, one of the symptoms Covid-19 classics. Tuesday, "Hopefully, I'm going back to work. Of course, if it is the opposite, I will wait a few more days, ”said Jair Bolsonaro.

"For the rest, everything is fine, we work all the time in videoconference, and we do everything possible so that things do not accumulate while I am in Alvorada," said Jair Bolsonaro again. He said last Thursday in his weekly Facebook live feed that after feeling sick he started taking a controversial drug, hydroxychloroquine, every day. "I'm fine, thank God," he said.

The second country in terms of contamination

Used for decades against malaria, hydroxychloroquine is used in many countries to fight Covid-19. But its effectiveness has not been formally proven and the question deeply divides the world scientific community. Brazil is the second country after the United States in terms of contamination and death related to Covid-19.

The Brazilian balance sheet as of Monday was 1,884,967 cases and 72,833 deaths. These figures included 20,286 new cases and 733 new deaths registered in the past 24 hours.
