What foods would suit you if you have hypothyroidism or are hyperactive? Are there certain foods you should stay away from? The answer is in this report.

Thyroid hormones control many activities in the human body, such as the speed at which the body burns calories and the heart rate.

Hypothyroidism, when hypothyroidism does not produce enough hormones, is more common in women, especially those over the age of 60, and if not treated it may lead to serious complications such as heart disease and infertility.

As for the hyperthyroidism, the opposite occurs, which leaves effects on the body, such as sudden weight loss and rapid heart and nerve impulses. If untreated, it may lead to serious complications, such as vision loss and heart failure.

According to the Health.harvard website, a person does not need to follow a special diet while taking thyroid medications, with some exceptions.

The site recommends the following:

  • Reducing foods that contain soy protein, since eating large amounts of soy may affect thyroid hormone absorption.
  • Avoid excess quantities of iodine, whether in medicines or supplements, as excess iodine may alter the level of thyroid hormone.

In contrast, most foods rich in iodine - such as products treated with iodine or fish - are allowed.

Harvard also recommends eating healthy food in general to support a person's general health, including thyroid health, by:

  • A varied diet that includes lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Protein is best obtained from low-fat sources such as fish and beans.
  • Adopting healthy oils like olive oil.
  • It is recommended to reduce bad fats, such as saturated fats that usually come from animal products such as meat and cheese, trans fats and hydrogenated oils in processed foods and vegetable ghee.
  • Focus on polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils, and omega-3 fats found in oily fish like salmon.
  • Seeds and nuts are healthy options.
  • Minimize soft drinks, potato chips, sweets, and other fast foods that have high calories and few nutrients.
  • Eat more dietary fiber that improves digestion. It is found in vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products such as brown bread and brown rice.

For its part, the British Thyroid Foundation recommends drinking plenty of fluids, at least 6 to 8 cups a day.

She pointed out that soybean interferes with the absorption of thyroid hormone, so if you take thyroid hormone then you should try to avoid soy.
