The President of Madagascar Andry Rajoelina said on Sunday that two parliamentarians had died from the coronavirus. "A deputy died, a senator died too, and after a test, there are now 11 deputies carrying the Covid-19 virus, and at the Senate level, 14 people are infected," the Madagascan president told television.

Peak of epidemic not reached

The death of the deputy, from the presidential party, was not recorded on the official list of people who died from the pandemic, on the pretext that he was not tested for coronavirus. Andry Rajoelina added that employees of the presidency had also been infected. "I cannot reveal his identity, but a close collaborator around me is also infected with this disease," said the head of state.

Since the start of the epidemic, 2,573 people have been infected in Madagascar, 35 of whom have died. The government estimates that the peak of the epidemic will not take place until the end of August.
