China News Agency, Moscow, July 13 (Xinhua News Agency) According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Far East and Arctic Development announced on the 13th that the sea transportation in the north will reach 150 million tons in 2035.

The Northern Sea Route refers to a route along the northern coastline of Russia and through the Arctic Ocean. It is the shortest maritime route connecting Europe with the Far East, Asia Pacific, and Western North America.

According to the news, in the next 10 years, (Northern Sea Road) freight volume basically comes from the Russian shipper. Only by meeting the needs of icebreakers, navigation, communications, and security can we lay the foundation for commercial operations throughout the year. The Russian goal is to make the northern sea route into a globally competitive transport corridor, and to increase international freight volume from 2030.

According to Interfax, citing the president of Russian Atomic Energy Group (the parent company of the Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker company, which is also responsible for operating the North Sea Road), Lihachov said that the freight volume of the North Sea Road will exceed 30 million tons this year.

Russia approved the comprehensive plan for the development of the northern sea route in 2015. In order to implement the plan, Russia is building the world's most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker, with a displacement exceeding Russia's Kuznetsov aircraft carrier. It is expected that the number of Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers will reach nine by 2035. In addition, Russia is also building multiple diesel-electric icebreakers. In addition to vigorously building ice-breaking ships, Russia also plans to set up a North Sea Transportation Management Center in the northern city of Murmansk this year to comprehensively organize navigation on the North Sea.
