13 July 2020About 45 tons of aircraft fuel spilled yesterday in the Russian Arctic from a depressurized pipeline operated by Norilsktransgaz, a company controlled by the Russian mining giant Nornickel.

The news comes from the Moscow Times which cited Norilsktransgaz herself, according to which the accident occurred near the town of Tukhard, in northern Siberia. The fuel would run out for 15 minutes.

The village is located near the Bolshaya Kheta River, a tributary of the Yenisei River, which flows into the Arctic Ocean.

The company has warned the government, and local authorities have declared a state of emergency.

Another accident in May
At the end of May, another accident occurred in a hydroelectric power station of the Norilsk-Taymyr Energy Company, always controlled by Nornickel, near the city of Norilsk. A
fuel tank collapsed, pouring over 21,000 tons of diesel fuel into the Ambarnaya River, also in the Russian Arctic.
