  • Scrutiny: Elections in Galicia

In Podemos they have been assuming for days that the flight of votes towards the PSOE and nationalist forces such as the BNG and Bildu could give them a new blow, this time in Galicia and the Basque Country. Fear turned into a double electoral slap, great debacle, despite the efforts of their candidates, Antón Gómez Reino and Miren Gorrotxategi , Pablo Iglesias himself, Minister Yolanda Díaz and other leaders who have exhibited the so-called "social shield" as a hammer. demanding the paternity of the government's social measures, as a cry for help, as a search for lifeguards. It was useless, sinking.

The shield has not served as a parapet. He has not given Podemos arguments, according to the verdict of the ballot box. Nor to download blame and attacks in the press. Gallegos and Basques have not given the purple ones the "new opportunity" that Iglesias was asking for, on the contrary, they have turned their backs to the detriment fundamentally of the nationalists of the BNG and Bildu, and in a lesser proportion of the PSOE. In Galicia, the land of Minister Díaz, they directly disappear. In the Feijoo feud, with 48,870 votes and 0 seats, they lost 224,653 votes and 14 deputies; and in the Basque Country, with 70,412 votes and 6 seats, 86,922 ballots and 5 seats are left in Parliament.

"Our political space has suffered an unmitigated defeat. We lose a good part of our representation in the Basque Parliament and are left out of the Galician Parliament . We have to do a deep self-criticism and learn from the mistakes that we have undoubtedly made. », Has been the assessment of Iglesias on social networks, because nobody from the leadership of Podemos has appeared before the media to assess the election night.

Podemos has proved itself incapable of making its government action profitable, its presence in the Council of Ministers with five chairs. They are weakened, their government partner, the PSOE, more successful. The electoral balance remains more settled on the socialist side, while Iglesias accumulates coal. It is also a punishment for a formation that also boasts a multinational spirit and soul in two territories in which this position should be a claim.

These regional ones confirm the downward trend of Podemos, which in the last electoral cycles has lost muscle every time the ballot boxes have been opened. And this time, the focus is on the purple formation , since the rest of the "progressive forces", as they define socialists and nationalists, their partners, have improved their results compared to 2016. In the case of the BNG, it seems that clearly at the expense of Podemos. That is to say, there has been no backsliding of this political space, there is no general backward step of the forces that were involved in the investiture block.

The fall of Podemos also prevents it from lacking arguments or legitimacy to sue tripartites with the PSOE and nationalists, which was its political proposal in the campaign. In Galicia, for obvious reasons.

Underlying the Podemos bump is also a new setback for Iglesias. Gómez Reino and Gorrotxategi are two faithful candidates for the purple leader , Pabloites, with whom the state leadership believed that it could minimize damage. They were his bets, as it shows that the Basque candidate was launched from Madrid against the list of the one who was the autonomous leader, Lander Martínez , who lost the primaries and resigned. The involvement, and also concern of Iglesias, were revealed on Wednesday when he went to La Coruña , in an act that was not foreseen at the beginning of the campaign, to try to clothe and contain the coup.

The step back from Podemos highlights some of the party's Achilles heels, and on which Iglesias has already shown his discomfort on some occasion, especially after poor electoral results: the lack of structure, settlement and loyalty of the vote in almost all territories other than Madrid .

The purple result shows that the internal battles and disputes, even though their leaders consider them to be overcome, are still present and set the vital rhythm of the party, often weighing down their claims and aspirations. In Galicia, Podemos broke with En Marea, the coalition with which in 2016 it managed to position itself as the second force with 14 seats; and he starred in a negotiation almost against the clock to build a new coalition, Galicia en Común-Anova Mareas , with tension at the starting points until the end. In the Basque Country, Podemos has had four leaders in five years. And the last one resigned after losing the primaries with the candidate that Iglesias launched against him.
