It was March 18 this year that the first patients with covid-19 in Västerbotten were admitted to hospital and intensive care unit, IVA. When the corona center was at its worst, 13 people were at IVA at the same time.

The contagion doctors expected that the falls in Västerbotten would increase significantly towards the summer and that the peak would be reached in late May or early June. But it never peaked.

Lowest mortality rate in Västerbotten

Instead of a peak in June, figures showed that the county was most spared in the country from the corona virus. With 0.8 dead per 10,000 inhabitants.

This week, Region Västerbotten issued a press release saying that the number of confirmed cases of covid-19 continues to increase, but fewer and more people are seriously ill and need hospital care.

And since July 1, Västerbotten has had no patients admitted to the intensive care unit for covid-19, and fewer and fewer need hospital care.

- It is so gratifying that we have not had any deaths in over two weeks. We have a stable location in the county, says Therese Thunberg, assistant infection control physician.

No large spread of infection in elderly housing

Therese Thunberg has reasoned with her colleagues why Västerbotten has relatively few deaths.

- A contributing reason may be that our elderly residents have not been hit so hard. We have not received the infection to the same extent among our oldest and most fragile. And we are a sparsely populated county that received sports leave later than Stockholm, it may have also contributed.

However, the Assistant Infectious Disease Doctor warns against relaxing too soon.

- We must remember that the danger is not over. We want to remind everyone to keep their distance and think about the recommendations.
