The Trail will be closed for another week. As reported by the Madrid City Council, "pending the response of merchant associations to the new proposal delivered last Thursday, July 8, it becomes impossible to complete the procedures for opening on July 12 ". Thus, the City Council is working on the reactivation of the market for Sunday, July 19.

The City Council proposed a first reopening with 350 positions on a rotating basis according to the list of authorized. That is to say, every Sunday they would open about 29% of merchants of all those who have a license. In addition, unlike the last project sent, this time it was proposed to do it in four one-way roads: the streets Ribera de Curtidores and Gasómetro and the squares of General Vara del Rey and Campillo del Mundo Nuevo. For this, the City Council will request the support of the Municipal Board of the Aranganzuela District.

Regarding the sanitary measures in the market , each of the stalls must have hydroalcoholic or disinfectant gel dispensers and maintain adequate hygiene and cleanliness both in the assembly and in the cargo vehicles.

As indicated by the spokesperson for the municipal government, Inmaculada Sanz, after the Governing Board on Thursday, this new plan aimed to mount the largest number of premises, complying with hygiene-health and safety measures to avoid contagion due to coronavirus.

So far, the street vendor associations have not commented on the new proposal . They are expected to do so this afternoon.

However, merchants have claimed to place 50% of the stalls every Sunday, alternating with paradists who open every week , so that everyone can work twice a month.

The other side of the coin is played by the residents of the sector. According to Jesús González, representative of the El Rastro Neighborhood Association, reopening the market with 50% of its stalls is unfeasible. "That means having 500,000 people on the streets of our neighborhood. That way it will be impossible to keep the safety distance, " he said. For him, it would be "crazy" to reopen until there is full assurance that the sanitary measures are going to be followed. "In our neighborhood we have many older people. We cannot risk a contagion happening here," he said. "All we ask is that our health be precautionary and that sanitary measures be complied with."

From the Central District of the capital it has been indicated that negotiations with merchants will continue until an agreement is reached that is satisfactory to all. What is certain is that this Sunday the city will not be able to enjoy its traditional street market.
