- Corona pandemic affects the situation - we find that fewer want students who are intrinsic, they are afraid of coronary infection. Then many of the emergency housing will disappear in the fall, says Jacob Färnert, chairman of the Uppsala Student Union.

But the coronan also has a different impact on the housing situation for the students.

- Since a lot of students will have distance education at least in the beginning of the fall, they may not be physically present but live elsewhere, and then there may be vacant housing, says Anders Gardikro, head of the student administration unit at Uppsala University.

Requires responsibility of the municipality

Despite this, the student union wants to put pressure on Uppsala municipality to take more responsibility - both for emergency residents and more long-term.

- Housing must be both more and cheaper, says Jacob Färnert.

Municipal Councilor Erik Pelling (S) points out that not so many student housing has been built in Uppsala in 20 years.

- In addition, more of the ongoing projects are being built with state investment support, which means that one can offer a lower rent.
