“We hear statements by our Japanese neighbors that we will be ready to conclude a peace treaty as soon as we solve the territorial problem,” Lavrov said during an online session of Primakov Readings.

According to him, this is not what they agreed on.

“We agreed to concentrate on concluding a peace treaty. As required by the 1956 declaration, ”he said.

According to RIA Novosti, the minister stressed that the basis of everything that should determine the future relations between Russia and Japan is the problem of the outcome of the Second World War.

"The legal position of Japan should be determined by the fact that Japan has ratified the UN Charter, and it has article 107, which states that everything that was done by the victorious powers is not subject to discussion," Lavrov said.

Earlier, the Japanese side sent a Russian submission due to geological exploration in the Sea of Okhotsk, including in the area of the islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, Iturup and Habomai.

In May, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Japan’s decision to return the issue of the Kuril Islands to the Blue Book on Diplomacy contradicts the task of creating a favorable atmosphere in relations between states.

The department emphasized the indisputability of Russian sovereignty over the Kuril Islands.
