“Although it is legal to protect and promote independent and reliable news reports, RSF sees these closures as an abuse of the EU sanctions policy,” the organization said in a statement.

The RSF notes that instead of a ban, any country may require the media to guarantee editorial independence.

The statement also mentions the establishment of the same requirements for all media.
