It is anything but a surprise. Martine Vassal, LR president of the departmental council of Bouches-du-Rhône, was re-elected Thursday at the head of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis, from the first round.

She got 145 votes. The candidate of the left, Gaby Charroux, communist mayor of Martigues, obtained 61 votes, Jean-Pierre Serrus, mayor LREM of La-Roque-d'Antheron, 22, and Stéphane Ravier for the National Rally 11 ballots.

Duel from a distance

Leaded by her defeat in her own sector of the 6th and 8th arrondissements and by the investigation into suspected fraud targeting elected officials, activists and LR candidates, Martine Vassal did not ultimately run for mayor of Marseille on weekends end last. The duel expected with Michèle Rubirola will therefore finally take place at a distance.

The candidate of a broad alliance of the left succeeded Jean-Claude Gaudin in the office of mayor of the second city of France. But in terms of economic development, transport or housing, the real power is rather on the other bank of the Old Port, on the side of the metropolis.

After her defeat at the municipal level in Marseille, Martine Vassal had however promised that she would continue to collaborate with the city "in an equitable manner": "I respect democracy and I will work with the mayor as I work with others. "
