A spark can cause a huge fire. And this is what happened in August 2017 in Lucéram (Alpes-Maritimes). At the time, 150 hectares had been destroyed and 200 firefighters had been mobilized to put out the fire. A man with burns on his hands had been evacuated. It was while working nearby, with a grinder, that the first flames were formed.

Three years after the events, the sexagenarian appeared before the Nice Criminal Court. He was tried and sentenced to three months suspended prison, reports Nice-Matin .

Damages not yet determined

While the prosecution requested an exemption from the sentence, the judges imposed one for "involuntary destruction of the property of others due to the violation of a duty of care," said the regional daily. Because at the time, in the middle of a drought, the use of this tool was not recommended.

The damages that the man will have to pay have not yet been defined, and the constitution as a civil party of the firefighters has been rejected because the fire was involuntary, says Nice-Matin again .
