The election was played with one ballot but it will probably have to be done again. The Versailles administrative court on Tuesday canceled the first round of municipal elections in Chevreuse (Yvelines), a town which houses the headquarters of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse regional natural park.

One month to appeal

On March 15, Anne Hery-Le Pallec, the outgoing LR mayor of this municipality of less than 6,000 inhabitants had indeed obtained 1,014 votes and her opponent Sébastien Cattaneo (SE) 1,013. But in its judgment, the court found that one of the ballots in favor of Sébastien Cattaneo was wrongly invalidated, therefore putting the two candidates on equal terms with 1,014 votes each, which effectively cancels the municipal and community elections.

The unlabeled candidate had also brought this action before the administrative justice to request the ineligibility of the outgoing mayor and one of his running mate for various reasons. However, these requests were rejected. As soon as the court's decision becomes final, the parties having one month to appeal, the municipality will have three months to call new elections and will be administered in the meantime by a "special delegation" made up of three people appointed by the prefecture. In the meantime, the current mayor remains in place.

Sébastien Cattaneo indicated that he would not appeal because "what [he] wanted above all was the cancellation of the election". As for the outgoing mayor, she must still consult her assistants and running mate on this point. "The principle of the decision is not a surprise but what is incomprehensible are their motivations", she explained, saying that she was satisfied however that the judge had dismissed any complaint of "cheating" with regard to from his list.
