Temple dedicated to "eating well" and nutrition, the city of gastronomy of Lyon opened on October 19, 2019 in the heart of the Grand Hôte-Dieu. - Caroline Girardon / 20 Minutes

  • Magma Cultura announced Monday the final closure of the Cité internationale de la gastronomie de Lyon.
  • An “opportunity” for the Metropolis, which sees it as an opportunity to review the project with economic and institutional stakeholders to make it a less profitable place, and accessible to all.

A real "flop" for some, an "opportunity" for others. The day after the announcement of the definitive closure of the International City of Gastronomy of Lyon, inaugurated with great fanfare last October, the metropolis is already working on the future of the place.

"The Metropolis takes note of Magma Cultura's wish to no longer operate the Cité internationale de la gastronomie de Lyon (…) This decision confirms that this project was not viable from its inception, a situation amplified by the Covid crisis", underline the services of the new ecological president Bruno Bernard.

La Cité, imagined on 4,000 m2 in the luxurious setting of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, failed to find its audience. As of its opening, the high prices of this place (12 euros the entry and 12 euros in addition to taste), presented as a true temple of good food, had cooled many visitors and aroused multiple critics. The health crisis linked to the coronavirus has aggravated the fragile economic situation of the site, the creation of which cost more than 17 million euros to communities (around 7 million) and private investors (10.4 million). A site that did not reopen during deconfinement.

A new “less commercial” place to imagine

For environmentalists, this closure sounds like "an opportunity", the possibility of marking with their paw this very emblematic place of the city. "We want the inhabitants to participate in the development of the new project, that everyone can find their way there," says 20 minutes of  the entourage of Bruno Bernard, where we imagine a place "accessible to all, less mercantile, dedicated partly to agriculture, to food, to eat well. "

A deliberation relating to the end of delegation granted to Magma Cultura will be submitted to the vote of the new advisers during the metropolitan council scheduled for late July. While waiting to write the future history of the City, the dome which currently houses the permanent exhibition dedicated to gastronomy should reopen its doors to the public soon, according to the services of Bruno Bernard.
