A sea kayak ride to see the seals

Sea kayaking is a gentle mode of travel, respectful of the environment, and allows you to approach a colony of sea calf seals in their natural habitat, without risking disturbing them. I boarded with a naturalist instructor, we paddled for about an hour to the sandbanks where the seals bask.

The tide was rising, which allowed me to observe them for about twenty minutes without binoculars, then the sandbank was covered by the waves. The seals had to shorten their nap, and went underwater to hunt the mules. I saw their heads a few meters from the boat, and their sharp snouts sticking out of the water, to watch what was going on, it was truly magical. For the return to shore, during the rising tide, you just have to let yourself drift quietly, without having to make the slightest effort.

Discover the Marquenterre ornithological park

The Baie de Somme is not just a story of seals. It is also, and above all, an ornithological paradise. Many species of migratory birds come to recharge their batteries in what is for them, a real giant pantry. It is moreover the Baie de Somme which inspired Jacques Perrin for his film The migratory people .

Curious or passionate can go to the Marquenterre ornithological park, on the north coast of the bay. I loved this place that I discovered with a birdwatching guide from the Bird Protection League (LPO). This took me on a hike, to a lookout post. There, dozens of species frolicked freely in the middle of dunes, pine forests, meadows and ponds. I was with a passionate who helps to identify the species and explain their way of life, the shape of their beak ...

Cross the bay on foot, and return by steam train

To feel alone in the world, nothing like crossing the bay on foot. From Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, in the south, to Crotoy, on the north coast. Accessible to all, this 5 km course is a moment of wonder. But in this universe in perpetual motion, it is imperative to be accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide who will make you discover the natural riches of the estuary and traditional activities. Sandbanks, channels, mudflats, salt meadows, ponds ... The scenery is total. And the ultimate charm bonus: we then return to Saint-Valéry by a steam train.
