It's official. President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), which it accuses of having mismanaged the coronavirus pandemic, an American senator announced on Tuesday.

Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the US from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic.

To call Trump's response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn't do it justice. This won't protect American lives or interests — it leaves Americans sick & America alone.

- Senator Bob Menendez (@SenatorMenendez) July 7, 2020

"Congress has received notification that the president has officially removed the United States from WHO in the midst of a pandemic," Robert Menendez, a Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote on Twitter. In the process, the information was confirmed to AFP by several officials of the United States government.

Effective exit after one year

The notification will be effective after a period of one year, July 6, 2021, said several officials of the United States government, the organization's largest contributor. When Donald Trump announced the suspension of US funding for the WHO in April, Joe Biden pledged to reverse the President's decision if he won in November.
