The alarm that there was a fire in a property in Skäggetorp came just before 4pm on Saturday. In the property length, there were 36 apartments that were totally destroyed. Until now, tenants have been allowed to stay temporarily in hotels and corporate residences. But now the property owner, the municipal housing company Stångåstaden, has arranged for a more long-term solution.

One year to restore the property

- It feels great that we have been able to solve evacuation housing for all affected families. When the fire started in one part of the property, the extent of the damage varies. Our preliminary assessment is that we expect it will take about a year for us to restore the entire building, ”says Stångåstaden's CEO, Fredrik Törnqvist.

During July and August, all will move to long-term evacuation homes at Stångåstaden and other landlords.

"Hard to investigate fires"

The police have not yet determined where or why the fire started, but during Tuesday they will do the last technical investigation in place. Thereafter, analyzes remain which the police hope will answer the questions where and why.

- It is difficult to investigate fires because most of them are burning up, says preliminary investigator Rickard Wennerström.

In parallel with the technical investigation, the police interrogate the residents and witnesses who may have seen something and they are still interested and dependent on more evidence.

- If it is possible to determine the cause of the fire, I hope that we can be there in a week, says Rickard Wennerström.

Already moved in

The apartments in the neighboring property that were damaged by smoke are now sanitized and tenants have been offered to move back, which some have already done. When the police have completed their technical examination of the fire-ravaged property, the housing company does a technical inspection to determine how damaged the property is, and only then can a more definitive assessment of the extent of the damage be made and a cost estimate for renovation.
