The Inspection for Healthcare and Care, IVO, has examined how the country's elderly residents have handled the corona pandemic - and presented their conclusions at a press conference on Tuesday.

Sofia Wallström, Director General of IVO, pointed out 40 municipalities that accounted for almost 70 percent of all deaths in covid-19 in the elderly.

- You can thus interpret it as these 40 municipalities have so far had the most difficulty in limiting the spread of infection and in part providing care and treatment to the elderly, she says.

"We have had three major outbreaks"

One of the municipalities on the list is Alvesta municipality. Arnold Lennartsson is a medically responsible nurse (MAS) in the municipality. He believes that one has to put the death toll in proportion to how many infected people have had in total and how long the infection has spread to the homes.

Alvesta got the infection early in the municipality's elderly homes, as early as March. Since then, 17 elderly have died.

- We have not been down to zero infected during the entire period. The cases relieve each other all the time, and we have also had three major outbreaks where many people fell ill at the same time, says Arnold Lennartsson and continues:

- The lesson here is that you have to go out and preach about basic hygiene routines and create an understanding of why you do different things.

Low death rates in several municipalities

According to IVO, their review indicates that the other 250 municipalities have been better at managing the infection in their elderly homes.

- This may be because the spread of infection has not come as far in some municipalities, but there are also several municipalities where there has been a general spread of infection but where the death toll has been lower, says Sofia Wallström.

IVO will proceed with its review of 91 properties where the situation is described as extra serious.
