The French justice system has opened an investigation against three of the members of the Government who were in charge of managing the coronavirus crisis: the Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe - who has already left his duties -, and the successive Health Ministers, Agnès Buzyn and Olivier See.

The Court of Justice of the Republic, competent for cases involving members of the Executive in the exercise of their positions, said in a statement on Tuesday that the Prosecutor's Office has opened the investigation for the crime of refraining from fighting an accident.

The penalties for that charge can be up to two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros.

The Court of Justice of the Republic had decided last week to accept nine of the 53 complaints examined against them, while 34 were dismissed due to the lack of interest of the complainants to follow the procedure or because they were incomplete, and a dozen were filed.

The complaints were presented by doctors, associations and private citizens since the beginning of the confinement in mid-March.

Édouard Philippe resigned last Friday as Prime Minister and was replaced by Jean Castex in the framework of the government reshuffle that the President, Emmanuel Macron, has carried out. Now he has assumed the mayor's office of the city of Le Havre, after winning in the second round of the municipal elections on June 28.

Agnès Buzyn had left the Ministry of Health in mid-February to run for mayor of Paris, but was not elected and is currently an opposition councilor. He was replaced by Olivier Véran, who continues as minister after the government reshuffle announced on Monday and is at the forefront of managing the health crisis.
