The Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales, the most populous in the country, will close their borders starting at midnight on Monday due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Melbourne.

It is the first time that the border between Victoria and New South Wales has been closed in 100 years. Officials last blocked the passage between the two states in 1919 during the Spanish flu pandemic.

The closure of the common border, which was the only one that remained open during the worst moment of the COVID-19 crisis in Australia, was announced after 127 infections were registered this Monday , the highest daily number in that jurisdiction since the beginning. of the pandemic, in addition to the death of a nonagenarian person.

The combined population of the states of Victoria and New South Wales is 13.9 million, which is more than 50 percent of Australia's total.

The unprecedented move was agreed in a phone call between Victoria's chief executive Daniel Andrews, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and New South Wales (NSW) chief executive Gladys Berijiklian.

Surveillance of the border, which extends inland for 4,635 kilometers, will be carried out by NSW to "avoid draining resources that are committed to fighting the virus in our state," said Andrews, referring to this border closure. .

"We know that there are four main road junctions, 33 bridges, two waterways and a large number of small roads," NSW Police Commissioner Nick Fuller said at a press conference in Sydney, calling for military aid to these tasks.

The Australian authorities will also issue special permits for people who necessarily have to cross this border to work, especially for essential jobs.

The closure of the border comes after a COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne, which has worsened for two weeks and has forced in recent days to confine more than thirty suburbs in that city of almost five million inhabitants, as well as nine public housing towers.

The coronavirus outbreak is attributed to non-compliance with social restriction measures by security guards in hotels where travelers returning to Melbourne are in their forties for two weeks.

The outbreak of coronavirus in Melbourne, which registers almost all the daily infections in Australia, has put at risk the strategy of the oceanic country, which registers more than 8,500 cases, including 105 deaths , to normalize activities in its territory.
