The Xunta de Galicia has taken the decision to close the A Mariña region (Lugo) for five days due to the Covid-19 outbreak registered in the area, which continues to add positive results (106). The measure comes into effect at midnight on Monday, July 6, and aims to prevent departures from residents of the area to other territories and reduce internal mobility.

This was communicated this Saturday by videoconference the Sanidade Minister, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña , to the mayors of the affected municipalities, sources from one of these municipalities reported. The measure will be in force until Friday, two days before the regional elections, called for Sunday, July 12.

In this way, the capacity will be limited and the opening hours of the hospitality establishments in the region will be reduced, which must close at midnight during this period.

The outbreak of A Mariña, whose detection was announced on June 24, has been adding cases and this Saturday it shot up to 85, according to data from the Department of Sanidade. Despite the notable increase in positives, most of them are asymptomatic or present mild symptoms, according to the same sources.

The president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, indicated this week that the origin of the outbreak was located in "two or three bars" in the area of the port of Burela (Lugo).

Campaign and voting

The increase in cases in this area of Lugo puts at risk the normal development of the electoral campaign when it faces its last week. The PP has already suspended all its events scheduled for this Sunday in the area but it seems difficult that any more could be held in the rest of the campaign.

Likewise, it will depend on the evolution of the number of affected persons who may have to take extraordinary measures on the day of the vote, July 12, and to minimize the risk of contagion in the polling stations. Everything is in the air. Confinement is currently only until Friday.

The President of the Xunta and candidate for reelection by the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has assured this Sunday that his pulse will not shake to "make all the necessary decisions" to protect the health of the Galicians, just as during the confinement by alarm status.

"Our pulse did not tremble and it will not tremble now," he said, because "the number one priority is public health" and "when we have to make decisions, we will make them," he said.
