The humanitarian ship Ocean Viking received authorization from Italy on Sunday to disembark the 180 migrants he rescued in the Mediterranean at Porto Empedocle, in Sicily, the NGO SOS Mediterranean announced. "We have received instructions from the Italian maritime authorities to disembark the survivors on board at Porto Empedocle. The ship ( Ocean Viking ) is currently sailing towards this port which we expect to reach by tomorrow morning (Monday), "explained the NGO.

The 180 migrants, including Pakistanis and Pakistanis, North Africans and North Africans, Eritreans and Eritreans and Nigerians, were rescued by the SOS Mediterranean ship during four separate operations, the 25 and June 30th. 25 of them and they are minors. After several requests to the Italian and Maltese authorities, the Ocean Viking had so far received only negative responses from the two countries and the tension had suddenly risen on board, so much so that the ship declared on Friday in " state of emergency ”, a first.

Rescue operations interrupted by the health crisis

A small portion of the migrants threatened the crew, some jumped into the water, others attempted suicide. The arrival Sunday on board of an Italian doctor promising them an imminent disembarkation allowed the return to calm. The migrants have been tested on Covid-19 and should be placed in quarantine. They could be transferred to a quarantine vessel while waiting to return to land.

While many migrants continue to flee Libya, aid boats have recently resumed their rescue activities, largely interrupted by the coronavirus crisis.
