The now 18-year-old man from Uppsala is being charged with data breach and preparation for data breach. According to the lawsuit, he created programs, called "crackers," which are used to hack online services, and infringed on the online game League of Legends servers in March last year.

- The use of such programs is not uncommon, but access to the person behind is not quite common. This is the first time I have had such a case, says Chamber Prosecutor Pontus Melander.

Jan Olsson, crime commissioner at the IT crime center at NOA (National Operations Department), confirms the picture:

- There are a few times a year we have cases where a Swedish is behind, he says.

Netflix a goal

The man is also suspected of having designed programs for hacking such as Netflix, Fitbit, Twitch and a service to watch sex shows. The software goes through a list of a large number of usernames and passwords, to see if they have access to the service.

- There are quite a few sites with previously hacked usernames and passwords. It is all based on being lazy as a person and using the same or similar password and username on several services. It's no wonder we have to remember many passwords, says Chamber Prosecutor Pontus Melander.

According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect has posted his programs on a site.

- He has told himself that he has resold the program and received a smaller sum for it.

Easy to protect yourself better

Jan Olsson says that last year 1.5 billion email addresses were found for sale online, often with a password.

- Keeping track of passwords is extremely important. One should have a password manager, it radically reduces the risk of being hit, and one should choose two-step authentication wherever possible.
