A fire in a building in central Paris left one dead, an elderly woman, two seriously injured and ten more lightly affected, on the night of Friday to Saturday, said a spokesman for the firefighters.

The fire broke out for a cause still unknown "shortly before midnight" in an apartment on the third floor of a building at 10 avenue des Ternes, in the 18th arrondissement in Paris, said Captain Florian Lointier. An elderly woman living on the fourth floor could not be saved by the firefighters, of whom some 130 intervened on the spot.

The fire, contained after about an hour and a half, released thick smoke and made the stairwell completely impassable. Eighteen people were however saved thanks to ladders deployed along the facade from the interior courtyard of the building, explained Captain Lointier.

An investigation was opened and the laboratory of the Paris prefecture of police went to the site to determine the causes of this incident.
