Coronavirus: 200,000 people confined to Spain after an increase in the number of cases

Worried about a “very significant” increase in the cases of Covid-19 in Catalonia, the regional authorities this Saturday 4 July ordered the confinement of around 200,000 inhabitants around the city of Lerida, west of Barcelona.

A new containment began this Saturday July 4 at noon in Spain, in the Catalan region. Following a “ very significant increase  in the number of cases of Covid-19 contagion  ”, approximately 200,000 people, living in the area of ​​Segria around the city of Lerida, are invited to stay at their homes, said the president of the region, the independentist Quim Torra.

Restricted entry and exit, groupings of more than ten people prohibited, visits to suspended retirement homes… This reconfiguration was decided only two weeks after the lifting of the general confinement which prevented the Spaniards from leaving their province.

A decision that comes at the same time as the border reopening, Saturday July 4, to nationals of 12 new countries. Earlier, Spain had already authorized entry into its territory to citizens of the European Union and the Schengen area as well as to the British since June 21.

One of the countries most affected by the pandemic , with at least 28,385 deaths, Spain had recorded Friday, July 3, 17 deaths from the coronavirus in 24 hours, the highest daily number of deaths since June 19.

Even if the authorities believe they have succeeded in controlling the contagion after a severe confinement of more than three months, the Ministry of Health pointed out on Friday that new reinforcements had been deployed in the airports, to "  control the arrivals of travelers  ", with temperature measurement and collection of their personal data.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health released Friday 3, the number of confirmed cases reaches 250,545 for 47 million inhabitants.
