The correctional court of Béziers (Hérault) sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison a 34 year old man, prosecuted for having transported, on March 7, just over 6 kg of cannabis resin from Spain. This 30-year-old was also tried for deliberately endangering the lives of others, by refusing to comply with orders from the police.

On that day, his vehicle was chased on the A9 motorway by officers from the Narbonne customs brigade (Aude). The man had tried to sow the customs officers, by forcing a toll barrier, then by taking departmental roads while practicing a particularly dangerous driving, notes Raphaël Balland, the public prosecutor of Béziers.

Police and gendarmes must have been called in to try to stop his mad rush. He ended up hitting a wall, before running away. Taking the legs around his neck, the man had thrown a bag, inside which the customs officers had discovered the cannabis resin, packaged in several packages. He was arrested on March 11.

During his trial, the man denied being the perpetrator of the alleged crimes. Besides the prison sentence, he was also sentenced to two fines of 3,000 and 12,000 euros.
