  • Debate.Valencia receives the Kings: the socialist deputy mayor asks "to rethink the state model"

The tourist drama that the pandemic has left summed up in a nougat ice cream. The one that King Felipe VI has tasted this Friday on his visit to Benidorm -without sugar, by the way, and without being imitated by Queen Letizia-, and that has served him to know first-hand the economic hole that is far from closing in the summer of the new normal. In an unusually half-full Benidorm for these dates of the year, it was an ice cream man who explained in first person to Don Felipe and Doña Letizia how difficult these months have been.

It was when, on their brief walk along the famous Levante beach , the Kings approached an ice cream parlor, in which the King opted for the flavor of the traditional Jijona nougat. The business owner has taken the opportunity to explain to the Kings the drastic drop in sales they have suffered. Without tourists, Benidorm's local commerce has undoubtedly suffered.

This has also been explained to the monarchs by the tourist businessmen of the Alicante city, who have confessed to Felipe VI and Doña Letizia that they consider the summer to be "lost" and that many of the shops, bars and restaurants are going to "have a hard time" . And we will see if they arrive next year, has been the message that the president of the hotel association Hosbec, Toni Mayor , has conveyed .

"Today, things are not looking good because there has been a very strong psychological impact " of the health crisis on potential visitors, which makes the sector "not expect joy" during the current summer period, according to Mayor. In any case, the greatest hopes are placed in the month of August, waiting for national tourism to rebound and the British, who are essential for an enclave like Benidorm, can cheer up.

In the meeting held by the Kings with the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, and business and union representatives, Felipe VI himself acknowledged that the state of alarm about the coronavirus "has been hard" for the tourism sector.

In this sense, the president of the Valencian CEV association, Salvador Navarro , wanted to highlight the importance of this visit with which the Kings "send the world a message of security . " Navarro has encouraged to visit and discover the beaches and cities of the Valencian Community "because it is a safe destination".

Also the president of the Valencian hoteliers has assured that they are "delighted" with the visit of the monarchs because it is "an act of normality that is necessary because there are still many people afraid".

Of course, from CCOO PV, its secretary general, Arturo León , has taken advantage of the meeting to put on the table job insecurity , which in tourism especially affects the so-called kellys or housekeepers: «The consequences of the pandemic in the economy and employment are and will be profound in our territory, due to the greater affectation of sectors such as tourism, hospitality or commerce, due to the existence of a business fabric dominated by small and medium-sized companies and due to job insecurity ”.

The visit of the Kings to the Valencian Community will conclude tonight in Valencia, where they are scheduled to attend the delivery of the 2019 Innovation and Design Awards.
