France: Jean Castex appointed Prime Minister

Change of face at the head of the government in France: Jean Castex was appointed Prime Minister this Friday, July 3, replacing Edouard Philippe. The latter will join the town hall of Le Havre after three years spent in Matignon.

National coordinator in charge of the deconfinement strategy during the health crisis linked to the new coronavirus , Jean Castex, was appointed this Friday to the post of Prime Minister by Emmanuel Macron to succeed Edouard Philippe.

Aged 55, this enarque and a graduate of public law was assistant secretary general of the Élysée during the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. He was interministerial delegate for major sporting events since January 2018 and interministerial delegate for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games since September 2017.

Jean Castex has also been mayor of Prades (Pyrénées-Orientales) since 2008.
