Chinese representative calls for the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Ceasefire Initiative as soon as possible

  Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, July 2-China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun spoke at the Security Council’s public debate on the impact of the new crown epidemic on international peace and security, calling for the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Ceasefire Initiative as soon as possible.

  Zhang Jun said that the epidemic has brought challenges to international peace and security. The Security Council should issue appeals and take action from the following four aspects: First, implement the UN Secretary-General’s Global Ceasefire Initiative as soon as possible, and take the new crown epidemic resolution just adopted by the Security Council as an opportunity to promote the parties to the conflict to respond to the Global Ceasefire Initiative, stop hostilities immediately, and work together Fight the epidemic, save lives, and strive to resolve disputes peacefully through political and diplomatic means. The second is to increase humanitarian assistance. The third is to ensure the safety of peacekeepers. Fourthly, the countries concerned should be urged to immediately cancel unilateral coercive measures during the epidemic situation. In addition, they should combine authorization to explore the fundamental elimination of unilateral coercive measures and reduce the suffering of the people of the countries concerned.

  Zhang Jun said that the current epidemic is still spreading around the world, and all countries are facing the arduous task of fighting the epidemic, saving lives, stabilizing the economy, and protecting people's livelihood. We should uphold the people first and life first, do our best to protect people's lives and health, and minimize the negative impact of the epidemic. The epidemic once again proves that we live in a global village, human beings are closely connected, and destiny is common. Unity and cooperation are the most powerful weapons to overcome the epidemic. China is willing to work with all parties to safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and support WHO to make greater contributions to the global fight against epidemics.

  Zhang Jun said that China has provided various forms of anti-epidemic support to more than 150 countries and international organizations, including all countries on the Security Council’s agenda. China has put forward a series of suggestions and measures to promote global anti-epidemic cooperation, including announcing the use of China’s new crown vaccine as a global public product and providing US$ 2 billion in international assistance to countries affected by the epidemic, especially developing countries, within two years, exempting relevant African countries have expired interest-free loan debts to China as of the end of 2020, and actively implement the "Government Debt Repayment Initiative for the Poorest Countries" of the G20 members. To strengthen international coordination, China has also hosted the China-Africa Solidarity Anti-epidemic Special Summit and the “Belt and Road” international cooperation high-level video conference.
