Three young men who were sentenced to between 8 years and 9 and a half years in prison for assaulting two civil guards in Alsasua in 2016 will enjoy, as of this Friday, the third prison degree. Ohian Arnanz , Adur Ramírez and Jokin Unamuno will leave Zaballa prison in Álava.

The eight participants in the attack sentenced by the judges are free.

The relatives grouped in the Altsasu Gurakoak collective (Alsasua parents in Basque) have communicated the decision of Penitentiary Institutions. Ohian, Adur and Jokin had been sentenced by the National Court to sentences of between 12 and 13 years in prison as the maximum responsible for the attack suffered by the civil guards and their partners who were on October 15, 2016 in the Koxka bar in Alsasua (Navarra).

The Supreme Court ratified in October 2019 the aggression left wing nationalists called "bar fight" while acts of solidarity with the attackers succeeded in their locality.

Reduced penalties

According to the courts, the young people committed a crime of attack on the authority, with injuries, public disorders and threats, although the judgment of the National Court already ruled out that it was an act of terrorism, as was ordered by judge Carmen Lamela .

In addition, the Supreme Court reduced the initial penalties in a sentence with two dissenting votes on the understanding that there was no discrimination.

The two officers stationed at the Civil Guard barracks were accompanied by their partners when they were identified by the youth. According to the testimonies of the civil guards, they were surrounded by a group of about 25 radicals who beat and threatened them until they managed to leave the premises.

In the ruling of the National Court that describes the events, it is reported that the attackers shouted at the guards that "we are going to kill you for being civil guards" and shouted insults at them calling them "sons of bitches" and txakurras (dogs, in Basque) .

Psychological treatment

One of the civil guards was hospitalized after suffering a ruptured tibia and fibula, while the rest of the assailants needed psychological treatment as a result of the attack.

During the investigation of the case, Judge Lamela directly linked the attack with the movement of the abertzale Ospa left, which demands that the Civil Guard leave Alsasua. Supporters from abertza annually hold an Ospa eguna or Goodbye Day with demonstrations and acts of protest at the presence of the Armed Institute in their locality.
