It was staff at a turtle center in Italian Lipari that alerted the coast guard. With the help of divers they could then cut off the net.

According to Kylie Owen, curator of the unit for environmental research and surveillance at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, this is a problem for the Swedish peddler as well.

In Sweden, there is the tumbler in the Kattegatt, Skagerrak and in the Baltic Sea. The population in the Baltic Sea is red listed and according to Kylie Owen there are about 500 animals left.

- Even if only one animal gets stuck in a net, it is a big problem for the population, she says.
