Argentine football star Diego Maradona has agreed to lead the Spanish national football team during the coming period, until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to a candidate for the Presidency of the Spanish Football Federation.

Candidate Antonio Torres said that he obtained Maradona's approval to lead the Spanish national team after contacting a number of those close to the Argentine legend.

Torres was quoted by Spanish media as saying that Maradona was the best player of all time, and his knowledge of the most popular game in the world could not be contested by anyone.

Torres linked the fulfillment of this promise to his accession to the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation scheduled for next August 17, knowing that he is competing with the current President of the Federation Luis Rubiales.

Torres fought the previous elections for the presidency of the Federation in 2018, and lost to Rubiales, who is expected to win elections next month, especially after the withdrawal of its main rival, goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Torres was a former Spanish second division player, and has undergone arbitration, and says his candidacy for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation came after he received the support of 15% of the union's 140-member group.
