In Sweden, every fourth of the total 45 institutions has had cases of covid-19 and a total of 127 inmates have been ill in covid-19. In the Stockholm area, five institutions and two detainees have been affected by the corona virus, and the reasons for this may be several, something that Maria Lindström's unit manager at the Prison Service, develops in the clip above.

Permissions become possible again

Even within the Prison and Probation Service, various ways of alleviating the restrictions are now being looked at and, among other things, certain permits will be granted from 1 July.

But when it comes to testing in the Prison and Probation Service, it is not as easy for inmates in Stockholm as for other residents of the region, who are now offered free testing of both ongoing illness and antibodies. Without it, it is up to what the inpatient's own health care mediate based on local resources.

And although the staff at the institutions are important in the work to prevent infection, the Prison and Probation Service does not have the right to test their staff.

JO critical to the Prison Service's handling of covid-19

JO, which in the spring examined the situation of the inmates in connection with covid-19, is critical to, among other things, how the Prison and Probation Administration handled the permits and it is now welcomed the decision to ease the restrictions on institutions and detention. JO thinks that the Prison and Probation Service should make their own decisions on the matter and not wait for the Public Health Authority's assessments, which it was previously said to do.
