The fourth conference in support of the future of Syria and the region was held today in the Belgian capital, with the participation of many countries and civil society organizations. The conference is being held remotely because of the implications of Corona.

The conference discussed the current situation in Syria by bringing together relevant actors, in addition to providing support to the United Nations efforts to reach a political solution, and providing material support to Syria and the surrounding countries hosting Syrian refugees.

UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Biderson, called on the constitution-drafting committee to meet again at the end of August.

In a speech to the Fourth Conference to Support the Future of Syria, Pederson called for a complete cease-fire, in order to re-launch the political process and ensure a safe return of Syrian refugees to their homes, and also called on the Syrian government and other parties concerned to release political detainees.

He said that his mission is to help find a political solution to the crisis, on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions, and that to do that "violence must stop."

The European Union said that rebuilding destroyed cities would cost additional billions of dollars and could not begin before the forces involved in the war supported a peaceful transition from President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

"We must do more to end the suffering of the Syrian people. We want first and foremost a political solution to the crisis," Josep Borrell, European Union foreign policy coordinator, said at the conference.

The United Nations called on donor governments during an online conference - today - Tuesday, to provide aid of about 10 billion dollars to Syria, as the war that started nearly 9 years ago displaced millions in a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Covid-19 disease and high food prices.

About 60 governments and non-governmental agencies participated in the video-donation round for Syria in an event hosted by the European Union.

The United Nations - which collected $ 7 billion last year - said it needs this year to raise $ 3.8 billion in aid inside Syria, where nearly 11 million people need help and protection, including more than 9.3 million who do not have enough food.

The organization is asking for another $ 6.04 billion to help 6.6 million Syrians who have fled their country, in the world's largest refugee crisis.

The World Food Program indicated that the economic downturn and general isolation measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 disease had pushed food prices up by more than 200% in less than a year.

Country donations

For his part, Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said that the time has come for the international community to stop the machine of killing the Syrian regime and its increasing violence.

In a speech to the Brussels conference, the Qatari Foreign Minister added that facing the unprecedented humanitarian consequences of the crisis in Syria will only be achieved through a political solution.

On Tuesday, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Qatar had pledged to provide additional humanitarian aid to Syria worth $ 100 million.

The ministry added on Twitter that the total country aid to Syria amounted to two billion dollars.

The new pledge came at a United Nations conference in Brussels via the Internet, as the world body seeks to raise nearly $ 10 billion in aid to Syria.
