Knut Pash, an expert at the Norwegian Institute of Cultural Heritage, said that only part of the wood has been preserved, but he added that modern technology may allow archaeologists to discover its original shape.
The report said that the ship was about 20 meters long and was discovered by experts using ground penetrating radar in 2018. At the same time, a large number of mounds and long houses were also found.
Although the exact date cannot be determined, the research team estimates that the ship may have been built between the late 7th and early 9th centuries. The reason archaeologists hope to complete the excavation as soon as possible is because they are worried that the fungus will further damage the hull structure. In the first stage, the team will remove the top soil. In the second stage, they will dig the stern and then the bow. The team hopes to find interesting findings in the final stage of the search.
