• Analysis.Qasem Soleimani, the shadow figure of Iran's regional influence

The Iranian Islamic Republic wants to be held accountable to the American President for the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani. Donald Trump ordered the drone bombing that ended, on January 3, with the head of the Revolutionary Guard's foreign operations wing and with a high command of the Iraqi Shiite militias outside the Baghdad airport. Tehran says it has issued a red notice to Interpol to obtain his arrest.

The Tehran prosecutor, Alqasimehr, announced his decision on Monday, during a meeting with local media. "The Judiciary has issued an arrest warrant against a total of 36 individuals involved in the assassination of Lieutenant General Soleimani, including political and military officials from the United States and other Governments, and the International Police has been notified in this regard," said, according to the Iranian agency Mehr.

According to the prosecutor, "President Donald Trump is at the top of the list, and his oversight will be sought even after his presidency is over." Alqasimehr has indicated that the charges brought are "murder" and "terrorist act". In addition, this month the Judiciary had announced that Mahmud Mousavi-Maj, accused of providing information on Soleimani's whereabouts, would be executed shortly. Still, Mousavi-Maj had been imprisoned for a year before the General's murder.

According to the Interpol website, a red notification is a requirement for security forces around the world to locate and provisionally arrest a person, at the request of one of the affiliated countries. The institution clarifies that a red notice, which must go through a body approval process before it becomes effective, "is not an arrest warrant." There are currently some 62,000 red notices in force, of which about 7,000 are public knowledge.
