Brittany has confirmed its anchoring on the left. This Sunday, during the second round of municipal elections, several cities fell into the hands of the left in a context of very strong abstention. The union lists overthrew Quimper, Saint-Brieuc and Morlaix and managed to keep Brest, Rennes and Nantes. A bright Sunday for the socialists marred by the loss of Lorient, a pink stronghold since 1965. The right also preserves Saint-Malo.

Isabelle Assih, first woman mayor of Quimper

The capital of Cornwall will be headed by Isabelle Assih. Sunday, the socialist largely won the municipal election by trusting 51% of the vote, far ahead of the outgoing mayor Ludovic Jollivet (39%). "It is a collective victory", commented the socialist on France 3 Brittany, warning: "It is a change of method which is looming". His opponent, a candidate from the right and from the center, failed to make up the delay conceded on the evening of the first round three and a half months ago. We will also note the slap received by deputy La République en Marche Annaïg Le Meur, only credited with 10% of the vote.

Agnès Le Brun overturned in Morlaix

In the north of the department, another surprise was played out since the outgoing mayor of Morlaix Agnès Le Brun was severely beaten. Neck and neck with Jean-Paul Vermot on the evening of the first round, the candidate Les Républicains bowed widely this Sunday. The list on the left led by Jean-Paul Vermot won 54% of the vote. The controversy surrounding the powers of attorney generated by the publication of an article in the Canard Enchaîné visibly hurt the outgoing mayor.

Brest trusts François Cuillandre

Without any real surprise, Brest will remain on the left. The outgoing mayor François Cuillandre easily imposed himself by obtaining a little less than 50% of the votes this Sunday. His indictment did not prevent the elected official from re-winning for a fourth term. The former prefect Bernadette Malgorn, who advanced under the label Les Républicains, is largely behind with 36% of the votes. The LREM candidate Marc Coatanéa comes third and is far behind (13%).

Municipal results

Saint-Brieuc switches to the left

In Saint-Brieuc, it was the candidate of the left Hervé Guihard who came out on top with more than 60% of the vote. His opponent Richard Rouxel (MoDem), supported by the former mayor and current deputy Bruno Joncour is beaten and obtains less than 40% of the votes. At the end of the first round, his list had merged with that of Corentin Poilbout, who was supported by the outgoing mayor Marie-Claire Dourion, who did not stand for re-election.

The right keeps Saint-Malo

MP Gilles Lurton will have to resign. This Sunday, he was quietly elected in Saint-Malo with more than 70% of the vote, far ahead of the left candidate Anne Le Gagne. He succeeds the centrist Claude Renoult, who did not stand for re-election.
