The official Saudi Press Agency quoted a spokesman for the border guards as saying in a statement that the guard patrols monitored three Iranian boats after entering Saudi waters, "where they were immediately followed up and repeated warnings issued to them to stop, but they refused to respond."

After that, the Saudi border guards patrols fired warning shots, after which Iranian boats returned their tracks, and the border guards stressed that "no violations will be allowed in the waters of the kingdom."

Tensions occurred in the Gulf waters last year when ships and oil tankers came under mysterious attacks near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and Saudi Arabia accused Iran of standing behind it, which Iran denied. Riyadh also accused Tehran of being behind attacks against installations belonging to the Aramco oil company last September, which were adopted by the Houthis in Yemen, who are supported by Tehran.
